Etsy's rules for AI art
Etsy's Creativity Standards let sellers list items made with generative AI, with conditions. As of 2026:
- List AI art as "designed by" you, not "made by" or handmade.
- Tell Etsy that AI was used when you create the listing, and say so in the description so buyers know before they buy.
- Sell the artwork, not the prompts on their own.
- Etsy's usual intellectual property rules still apply: no other artists' styles by name, characters, logos or real people you don't have rights to.
Policies change; check Etsy's Creativity Standards and seller handbook before listing. None of this is legal advice.
What copyright does and does not cover
The US Copyright Office's 2025 report confirmed that images generated entirely by AI aren't protected by copyright: a prompt alone isn't enough human authorship. Your own changes to an image, such as painting over it, combining it with your own work or substantial editing, can be.
In practice: anyone can legally copy a purely AI-generated design, and listings get copied fast. Sellers who last tend to add something of their own, such as their own edits, typography, a consistent style or a collection that's hard to copy all at once.
Making AI art big enough to sell
This is where AI art listings lose buyers. A printable sold as "up to 24×36" needs 7,200 × 10,800 pixels at 300 DPI, and a typical AI image has 1,024 × 1,024. A buyer who prints it big gets a blurry poster and leaves a review about it.

Generate at the right ratios
Printable sets usually come in five ratios (2:3, 3:4, 4:5, ISO and 11×14). Generate at the main one, and extend or re-layout for the others. The wall art sizes guide lists them all.
- 2
Fix AI mistakes first
Hands, text, faces in the background and anything that should be symmetrical. Buyers zoom in on listing photos, and a print shows everything.
- 3
Upscale every file to its largest size
Upscale each ratio to the biggest print it is sold at. Resly delivers up to 16 megapixels, which covers 8×10 and 11×14 at 300 DPI and an 18×24 at about 192; for a full 300 DPI 24×36 you need a bigger upscaler. State in the listing what you actually deliver.

Check the requirements of where it prints
Print-on-demand platforms have their own minimums per product. The Printful and Printify guide covers them.
