Why crop before you print
A print is a fixed shape. Phone photos are 3:4, a 4×6 is 2:3 and an 8×10 is 4:5, so when the shapes differ the lab trims the photo to fit and decides for you what gets cut. Cropping it yourself first means you choose: the frame here is locked to the print’s exact shape, so nothing more is trimmed. The sizes covered are 2.5×3.5, 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 8.5×11, 12×12, 11×14, 16×20, 18×24, 20×30, 24×36 inches, in portrait or landscape.
Crop or extend?
Cropping works when there’s background to spare. When there isn’t, and a crop would cut through a head or a hand, the other way is to extend the photo to the print’s shape, adding background with AI instead. The size pages do that for every standard size. For one person out of a group shot, see how to crop someone out of a group photo.
When a crop is too small
Cropping throws pixels away. A face cropped out of a phone photo can end up a few hundred pixels across, which prints soft at any size bigger than a wallet. The check under the crop catches that, and the print size chart lists the pixels every size needs. If yours comes up short, upscaling the crop rebuilds the detail a bigger print needs; the guide to blurry prints covers the free fixes first.
Questions
How do I crop a photo to 4×6?
Choose your photo, pick 4×6 and portrait or landscape, then drag the frame over the part you want to keep. The frame is locked to the 4×6 shape, so whatever is inside it prints without the lab trimming anything more. Download it and order the print.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cropping happens in your browser and the cropped file is saved straight to your device. Nothing is sent to us unless you choose to upscale the crop, which is a separate, paid step.
Is it really free?
Yes: no account, no watermark, no limit on how many photos. Resly AI charges only for upscaling, which a crop needs only when it's too small for the print size.
How do I know if my crop is big enough to print?
Under the crop the tool shows how many pixels per inch it gives at your print size. 300 looks sharp even in the hand, so an 8×10 needs 2,400 × 3,000 pixels for that. Below it, the tool tells you how far away the print looks sharp from. Big prints are seen from further back, so a 24×36 poster looks sharp from a few feet at about 80.
Should I crop or extend my photo?
Crop when there's spare background around what matters, such as sky or floor. Extend when the photo is already tight, so a crop would cut through someone. Extending adds new background with AI instead of cutting any away.
Is there a size limit?
Photos up to 50MB in JPG, PNG, HEIC or WEBP. A crop is saved at full resolution up to 16 megapixels, the most a phone browser can handle in one image.
