The five ratios and what they print
| Ratio | Prints at (inches) | Largest size at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|
| 2:3 | Prints at (inches): 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 | Largest size at 300 DPI: 7,200 × 10,800 px |
| 3:4 | Prints at (inches): 6×8, 9×12, 12×16, 18×24 | Largest size at 300 DPI: 5,400 × 7,200 px |
| 4:5 | Prints at (inches): 4×5, 8×10, 12×15, 16×20, 24×30 | Largest size at 300 DPI: 7,200 × 9,000 px |
| ISO (A sizes) | Prints at (inches): A5, A4, A3, A2, A1 | Largest size at 300 DPI: 7,016 × 9,933 px (A1) |
| 11:14 | Prints at (inches): 11×14, 22×28 | Largest size at 300 DPI: 6,600 × 8,400 px |
ISO sizes are all the same shape (1:1.414), so one file prints at any of them. A4 is 210×297 mm and A1 is 594×841 mm.
5×7 and 8.5×11 don't fit any of the five. Most sellers leave them out, or add them as a sixth file inside a zip.
Watch the file size
The largest files are big: a 24×36 at 300 DPI is 7,200 × 10,800 pixels, nearly 78 megapixels, and a detailed JPG of that can pass Etsy's 20 MB limit. If it does, save the JPG at slightly lower quality (80–90 is invisible in print), or make the largest file at 200 pixels per inch instead of 300. A 24×36 is seen from across a room, and 200 is plenty there.
Making the other ratios from one artwork
- 1
Start from the biggest version you have
Design at the largest size and resolution you can. Every other file is derived from this one, and no later step adds back detail you never had.
- 2
Re-layout designs with text or borders
Typography, frames and anything near the edge should be rearranged for each ratio in your design tool, not cropped or extended. That's the only way the margins stay even.
- 3
Extend designs with open backgrounds
Paintings, photos, abstracts and illustrations with sky, texture or plain colour at the edges can be extended to each new ratio instead of cropped, so nothing in the composition is lost. Check the new edges at full size: generated background works best when the edge continues something simple.
- 4
Export each ratio at its largest size
Then export each file at the pixels in the table. Resly's own output is capped at 16 megapixels, about 192 pixels per inch at 18×24 and 136 at 24×36: fine on a wall, but short of 300 if your listing promises it at the largest size. Say what you deliver in the listing, and don't promise more.
